Wow I have to admit this came as a complete surprise to me, so I double checked, and apparently this is true. At least there are a lot of sites that also have this news. Including financial sites and Japanese sites.
But as the article also states, the main reason is that Japanese car makers have been dragging their feet on fully electric cars, but those are only 22% of the total new car sales in EU in May?
So I must admit I’m still a bit puzzled about how China has surpassed Japanese, considering Japanese cars have a pretty good marketshare in EU overall, and AFAIK for China they are mostly selling BEV cars, that target only 22% of the market?
Are there markets in EU where Chinese brands sell a lot of ICE cars?
Because the total market was 1.2 million cars with 22% being electric that about 250k electric, and China sold 138,410 cars. if those were all electric China would have 50% of the EV market!!! And that is definitely not true. For instance here in Denmark with 80% EV sales China has only 2 models in the top 10.

If it is imports as in Chinese made, it would make more sense to me, because Japan make a lot more cars in Europe than China does.

These media articles all contradict each other…Toyota losing sales and going broke, or Toyota is number one in worldwide sales.

EVs make huge sense in Europe, and they are now the least expensive options. Not sure if this is about EV revolution or affordability in a region where petrol is expensive. Right now, petrol in EU is €1.72, whereas it’s €0.95 in Canada, and less in the US.

So even for low range driver @10,000km/yr, they save €2,000/yr in a small car, or a free car in 15 years. Europeans do this math, North Americans do not.

But as the market share leaps up on EVs, passing EV only laws in cities will be trivial.

I see fucktons of BYDs… Usually being driven like an arse. Instant EV power is too fun for people to not abuse.

Selling cars to the idiot public with more power than a 70s F1 car is a bad idea. This is why we see so many EVs crashing through buildings because of wrong pedal ‘accidents’.

With 80% EV sales we still rarely see them here in Denmark.
Which is in line with the sales statistics.
        What country are you in?
