Luna - New Moon by Ian MacDonald is a fun read. Luna is controlled by a few great families whose ancestors were among the first colonists. It’s been about a century since industrialization really got going.

On one hand, it’s a really good. On the other, the future it predicted failed.

Let’s start with the author’s ideas about prison. When the book was written, cartels and prison gangs were nowhere near as prevalent as they are today. The idea that there’d be no gangs running the Lunar prisons might have made sense in 1966, but not today.

I also get a chuckle out of the idea that it’s easier for a computer to achieve self-awareness than it is for that same computer to create a realistic video image.

I use the term ‘antique science fiction’ for older books that are fun to read but can’t be taken seriously.

I agree with the message.

Two novels that this reminded me of.

“The Iron Dream” by Norman Spinrad. The book starts with a forward that explains that Adolf Hitler left Germany in 1920 and started illustrating science fiction pulps in New York’s Greenwich Village. By 1933 he felt comfortable enough to transition to writing stories. Cut to the ‘novel.’ A young man returns from exile to find his homeland overrun by vile mutants who use mind control to subjugate the pure humans. With fire, steel, and a magic weapon he leads his troops to victory.

“Flashman” by George M. Fraser. Flashman was originally a minor character in a book titled “Tom Brown’s Schooldays” That book was read and loved by generations of British boys. Flashman was a bully and a rogue who is expelled. In the Fraser novel Flashy comes into his own when he joins the British army. He’s a coward, thief, murderer, rapist, and at one point works as a slave dealer.

It’s one of the few books that paints the colonizers as they were.

The original Marvel comics from the 1960s were all set in New York City, except for the Hulk, who roamed the US Southwest.

DC comics from that era spread the action in a variety of made-up cities, like Gotham, Metropolis, Ivy Town, Coast City and the like. Wonder Woman was based in Washington DC
