The actual death toll is probably higher than that as most bodies are never found because the cows drag the body’s up into trees when they’re never found.

I assume it’s a reference to the game West of Loathing, where in the past “the cows came home”. The cows were demonic bovine monsters that razed huge chunks of the land.
