Fun fact: it is scientifically proven that messy beds, thanks to more exposure to UV light and better distribution of that exposure per various points of surface, have lower populations of harmful microorganisms and are better for your health.

Memes@lemmy.ml•Not Pictured: US Empire propping up Zelenskyyys nazi government to kick off the proxy war
22·5 days agoTankie is a pejorative for those who defend socialist states.
Never heard it used against democratic socialists who acknowledged mistakes of the past.
The “authoritarian” part doesn’t really make any sense, considering the Marxist analysis of authority is that what matters most is which class has the authority of the state.
So you believe there were no authoritarian socialist states in history? Ones that silenced critics, shot protesters, censored press and didn’t have competitive elections? Lol.
Either way, the ethnic cleansing of the Donbass region was widely reported even by western organizations until 2022, then this was all wiped away and minimized.
This war killed almost half a million people already on all sides combined (if we believe Russian MoD, this number way exceeds a million). Do you think the “ethnic cleansing” would kill this much in a thousand years? According to DPR-operated media, only 17 people died in last years before 2022 on Donbas, most from uncleaned minefields.

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•Shorthand should completely replace cursive in schoolsEnglish
51·7 days agoI live in a European country where cursive never fell out of use (in fact, I believe here your exam papers will not be accepted if you write them in anything but cursive). All I know about cursive state in America is that it was phased out, and now seems to be returning.

23·8 days agoYou made it about communism by complaining about tankies
From Wikipedia:
Tankie is a pejorative label generally applied to authoritarian communists, especially those who support or defend acts of repression by such regimes, their allies, or deny the occurrence of the events thereof.
Not about communism as a political philosophy.
You are covering up the ethnic cleansing committed by Kiev against the Donbass region
This is a common myth created by Russian propaganda. I invite you to check it for yourself. Open an official website of any town that was part of Ukraine before 2022 and had Russian majority in population. Check publications before 2022. You’ll see an abundant use of Russian language and culture. Even Zelenski, with Russian being his first language, often spoke it in political campaigns.
Now many of these towns are ghost towns due to shelling.

24·13 days agoI’m sorry, but that’s not about pro-communism and anti-communism. You know Russia is no longer a communist country, right? That’s about pro-war and anti-war. Blaming Ukraine for the start of the war and following genocide (or denying that genocide happening) is one of the most absurd and dangerous fakes created by Russian propaganda and it deserves to be challenged.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is there a widely accepted open source alternative to What3Words?
4·13 days agohttps://plus.codes/ click ミ > Grid
The full plus-code is actually 8 characters before the plus and 2–3 after. Usually you only need 4 to get within one city. Just like with phone numbers, where the first geographical part is often omitted.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Would the US (if not the entire world) be better if that kid didn't break in to Harambe's enclosure over in the Cincinnati Zoo back in 2016?
11·13 days agoPeople in this article were arrested for trying to break a barrier and throwing projectiles. It’s really hard to get arrested in the US for speech alone. As a person from an actual authoritarian county, sorry, you don’t really get to play the victim here.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•‘There is no way to stop this’: Canadian biotech entrepreneur wants to genetically modify babies
51·15 days agoAs the world is right now, we live is “gattaca-lite”. Your success in life depends on genetical characteristics that you got at conception by pure luck. You can’t (or less likely to with the same amount of effort) become a pilot with poor vision, a musician with serious disorder of hearing, a scientist or engineer with learning difficulties, an actor with some forms of autism. Parental wealth and health also have impact on your congenital stats.
If anything, genetic intervention will make the society more equal. Yes, it would be nice if every parent would have access to this for free, and current influence of bad genetics would be eliminated, but even if in first years of this tech being developed only kids of rich will be enhanced, this advantage will not be more or less deserved than random chance we currently have.

A good charity can save a dozen lives with a 100k donation. It would take a few million button pushes until well-being of the global poorest gets so good that the cost of saving one life rises to 100k and you are no longer morally obligated to press.
