  • For me it’s being able to say we should have stronger sentences for child predators without getting banned. Can’t do that on Reddit. And I can’t keep my mouth shut about people who go out of their way to hurt kids. I think they should be locked up longer. That gets me banned on Reddit. Maybe an AI/bot did it, but a human upheld it. And that was all of Reddit, Reddit themselves, not a subreddit. Like I understand saying that on a jailbait sub, is probably gonna upset the moderators, but Reddit as a whole? Wild.

So the greater point is, I can’t get banned from YOUR instance. You’re on piefed.zip. If I piss you off, what you’ll do is either block me, or report me… to dbzer0, the instance I’m on. And they can ban me. The neat thing is, I can just go make an account on Lemmy.world if I want to. Or some other instance. Some instances defederate each other, which means the entire instance blocks another one. Lemmy.ml got defederated by some (including mine) for being not left enough or too right politically. I didn’t follow it that closely. People on Lemmy.ml can still post, they just can’t see me and others on my instance. Piefed.zip may not have defederated them, so you would still see them. But I can still see some lemmy.ml users (and I bear them no ill will). I see four in the comments. They’re fine by me.

  • Yeah, I think most new PCs are also Copilot PCs with the branding and the button, if that’s what you mean. I don’t really mind that. I only use Windows at work, and we can’t use Copilot because it requires a personal Microslop account now, and we’re not allowed to sign in with one (only the corporate Intranet account). I think some people do anyway; to me, it’s as bad as using Facebook/whatever social at work, because IT can see everything you do. And I have enough history with Microslop (Xbox as well) I don’t want to associate with my job. I leave my job at the door when I leave and I leave my personal/social life at the door when I go there.

  • What apps outside of the Play Store, and why do I care about them? (Again, assuming I’m a new Pixel/Galaxy user.)

I remember when I bought Titanium Backup (anybody remember that?). You could buy it for X on the Play Store, or you could buy the unlocker from the developer. IIRC you pay a little bit less, but he gets 100% of the money, so you just cut Google out. I don’t recall exactly, but I did that.

I feel like anything you want to get that’s not on the Play Store, you’re gonna be savvy enough to install. Like FDroid. People who install FDroid tend to know what they’re doing. Or ad blockers. Or whatever torrent/Dark Web app that’s not in the Play Store. You’re gonna know how to do it, and if these hoops stop you from doing it, you can always get a geek to do it for you… or maybe you’d be better off not doing it learning how your device works first.

  • I hate how that word became pejorative, because it was used correctly. By the way, it’s still used in plumbing. Retard is a verb which means to slow, e.g. retard the flow. When you call a person who is developmentally disabled that, yes it’s rude, but it means their mental process is slow. The word was being used accurately. It’s just not nice to say.

I don’t think “window licker” was ever accurate, but for some reason it’s slightly more socially acceptable to say (or imply, e.g. “I will say this for him, his windows are always clean”).
