Saying “please” when asking someone to do you a favor isn’t excessive, IMHO. It indicates that you are making a request and not issuing an order, and recognizes that you are grateful for the assistance.

Presumably you had to travel to get there. It’s likely you didn’t have anything to drink while travelling. So they offer you a drink.

Also, it’s nice to sit and chat while enjoying a drink, whether that is a warm drink (coffee, tea, whatever), a cold drink (water, juice, soda, whatever), or an alcoholic drink (beer, wine, whatever).

Edit: Also why are you annoyed? If you don’t want anything a simple “nothing for me, thanks” is fine and shouldn’t put you out too much!

Just so you’re aware, your posts in this thread come across as very belligerent to me. I’m trying to ignore the tone that I perceive, and to clarify.

My understanding had been that the brain worked differently based on how it was getting text. I did a bit of DuckDuckGo and it turns out that further research shows that these differences are not that big:

Your brain works differently listening to audiobooks than reading. So it’s not necessarily a substitute, in that you may not get the same out of the text.

Having said that, my wife is a bit ADHD and struggles to read books, but is addicted to audiobooks. 😅

My kids both prefer paper books to e-readers.
