The EV fees are a very stupid solution to a real policy issue.

They should change it to a fee by vehicle weight, based on road wear caused. This means the vast majority of road maintenance will be paid for by the groups that actually cause it: trucking companies.

We can keep gas taxes as a fee for poisoning everyone.

Well, it’s kind of damned if you do damned if you don’t. As you point out, climate change is already fucking us over with respect to food production and that’s only going to get exponentially worse. The less oil we use now the more time we have to develop and implement alternatives. Even if there is some short-term suffering it’s probably net beneficial to the world’s poor in the long run.

Of course we could easily make this transition without hurting the poor if we so chose but the powers that be have no interest in this.

The poor will suffer way worse if we don’t stop using fossil fuels. This is short term thinking.

Ideally we would transition in a sane, controlled way that doesn’t cause economic chaos. But since we haven’t done that, it just leaves the hard way.

So far there isn’t much evidence of that but I guess we’ll see. I don’t want people to starve, so I’ll admit it was wrong if this does end up causing a famine or something.

But I mean food prices were life double a few years ago so it’s not that bad currently.

Yeah as a former straight A student, entering the workforce was a rough transition. Suddenly smarts and hard work are nearly irrelevant and it’s all your ability to sell yourself, appease your bosses, etc. Turns out no one taught me these skills and in many cases taught me the opposite.

Yeah that’s probably the closest that exists honestly.

But really what I want does not exist.

Also by downtown I do mean a real downtown with actual amenities.

Also Central Park is not exactly unspoiled wilderness. It is nice but not quite what I want.

These could be factors but I do think this is probably accurate overall. Walkable areas are expensive primarily because they’re in such short supply. It doesn’t take a majority to make it expensive, just a slice of the population larger than the people who can actually fit in such places. And since we’ve made dense urban development illegal in like 99% of the country, naturally any amount of people wanting to live in such places is too much.

Ultimately I think this is a problem created by large, majoritarian government. The suburban majority decides urban design and the rest have little to no power to object.

This is a bit of a myth. Many (most?) American cities were designed before the car too. But urban planners in the 20th century went all in on cars and racism and demolished their central cities to to evict all the undesirables and replace them with car infrastructure.

Actually some European cities did this too, but many repaired them later. Still, it wasn’t as common because the racial stuff wasn’t in play and the central cities had way more historical significance.

Admittedly the sheer amount of suburban development we have today is going to be a challenge to roll back. In my view some of it may ultimately need to be abandoned but we’ll see how it plays out. See Detroit for an example.
