Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What’s the one killer feature of Lemmy / PieFed / Mbin?English
1·16 hours agocan’t say its one thing with piefed. there are a bunch of options. I would say for the fediverse in general besides the federated nature its the control I have of my experience. filtering and blocking as I decide and if my instance blocks things and im not cool with it I can find an instance that does not block it.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How do you track the progress of show you watch?English
1·16 hours agoI don’t watch shows such that i keep up on them. I more watch whats available to me in different ways. There is background watching and then taking time to really watch something. As far as discovering whats available there is no process. Im kinda lazy so if something wants to get my eyeballs they have to work to provide it to me free.
I feel this as I have been playing this. granted it was 90% and two in a row.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Most Americans would rather live in a big house in a car-based community than a small house in a walking-based community.English
3·1 day agoI don’t want to live in a small house I want to live in a high density building. Preferably with about 100 units so its still small enough to be a community. It would need a garage though as my wife cannot handle not having a car. I can get her to not use it often but she can’t fanthom not having it as an option (just to be clear this is really far for her and im pretty sure if I die she will be driving every day).

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•Gen X didn’t have it as good as boomers but they weren’t far off.English
1·1 day agoWhelp here is a gen xer injecting themselves. Everyone earlier has it better than those after but to say its not far off is well. far off. Even with boomers to some degree. especially if you were a refular person. silent would be better. Silent started with the depression when they were babies and very young and then ww2 had rationing and such but they hit adulthood just as we got to post ww2 whereas the boomers were just being born. greatest generation got the benefits of the depressions social programs but dealt with a lot of the bad times that lead to it. silent started bad but their whole lives basically got better over time. Boomers too but like the youngest silent is just into 80’s so a lot of them clocked out about covid and later. That is some good time to punch the ticket. Older boomers have it better than younger boomers and same with X. Boomers still had a chance of the family with 2.5 kids, free standing house with 2 cars and garage, and either vacation property or enough money to take regular vactaions. X it sorta seemed possible but most could not reach it although if you did well enough and made the right (for their personal enrichment) choices you could come close. Millenial you have to have done exceptionally well. So like Xers that became primary care doctors had that “typical” life. Im not sure what a millenial primary can even do that now. Might have to be a specialist. So to take my personal experience my silent gen parents were single income on a janitor job and had 7 kids, owned the 5 bedroom house we were raised in before they retired with social security, savings, and pension. My boomer elder brother worked the same janitor thing and never married but managed a 3 bedroom place and while smaller still got social security and a pension. I married but had no kids and have a 2 bedroom condo (for now) and am whittling away savings near the end of my career where I will have no pension and a relatively smaller social security. Pretty sure millenials in my (realtive) shoes won’t ever own a place. Who knows maybe will manage an efficiency or with two incomes they might be able to have my relative level. Z even with two incomes I don’t know unless things massively change.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•eYou promises to change social media. But the alternatives already existEnglish
1·1 day agoI mean I know the studies and I think it was a thing but I have found it does not work very often in many systems like this on the internet and the issues we have with voting. Its funny because I recently read a thing by lucien greaves and it really scratch my itch on that. He called it emergent stupidity. His basic thing is that estimates must be free from influence and coercion, and derived from a diversity of opinions. Now I would include that influence and coercion is often part of gaming the system. Something we see often. Also things like the bean guessing everyone is doing it in basically the same way. Guessing a specific number it might be. As I said people do not apply the same principles with the voting system. If everyone voted based on their actual opinion or did not vote at all it would likely be useful and I think we saw that at one point early on like with slashdot. If some upvote everything and some downvote everything you would think it would cancel but I don’t think it does partiailly because of the fractured nature of this medium. Some topics will have hoards of upvoters and some downvoters. That is even before you take into account the ones trying to game. So again personally I would prefer none of it and just have the sytem use what I have put into it. Ironically if the system was done that way were peoples voting effected an algorith for only their feed. So their choices only effected them. That would actually be useful on a population level but the moment it was known it was being used for that it would start down the same hole of people not voting for themselves but for their percieved effect on others.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•eYou promises to change social media. But the alternatives already existEnglish
1·2 days agoI have seen posts and replies from people that say they upvote almost everything. this is why I find public voting as useless. I like the thought of the sytem using my votes for a view but since everyone votes differently I find community voting to be useless.
I completely disagree with this type of unnuanced view. yeah war generally is point less so this could be said about every country that has had war. korea was proxy and viet nam was kinda taken over from france. in proxy wars either side could stop being involved. The sudden attacks on venezuela and iran are really out of no where. I would say the closest we have to this is the second iraq but even then they spent a bunch of time at least trying to rationalize it. Up until now many allies have been involved before moves were made.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•It's 2026, which tech did you realistically think we would have by now?English
2·2 days agoI wonder about that in the modern age though. I mean there has to be a factor of how easy it is to copy and store. So likely a lot was lost before performance recording capability. In the car I mostly listen to npr but when I don’t care for whats on I will just sorta jump between stations and there is a thing now for stations to kinda take a time period but they don’t seem to be very discriminatory about it. On the other hand now that we can call up any song we want likely you will see the cream come up to the top on what gets asked for a lot. I have one particular gripe though because my fav band tull had this album crafting they did where the position of songs, especially the first and last, were real important. They have these special editions they kinda just tacked songs on them and it ruins the flow. Its impossible, at least with amazon, to get the device to do the original vs the special edition that it defaults to.

1·3 days agono idea. its one of those things because like I can’t even remember each thing lost. It was like. Why can’t I do X now. Can’t say some good features where not added but like if I go and use it now on my tablet it will lose directions without internet access and with a downloaded map. I could certainly do that on the original pixel tablet way back when. The good thing is I likely would not be using open source things like organic maps if they had not enshitified themselves.
