I vote (used to anyways) in South Carolina District 04, and have been asking people for decades to show me “that my vote matters.” No one has ever responded. There is the Republican Party and the Jim Clyburn Party in South Carolina, that’s it. Jim Clyburn actually supports the state’s gerrymandering because it ensures his reelection. The Democratic Party state headquarters in run out of a Columbia Piggly Wiggly restroom, also controlled by Jim Clyburn.
I’ve seen ballots during off-year elections that have only Republicans running for state and local offices on it. Even Republicans have no choice with their votes. The current House Rep, Bill Timmons, (bet you never heard his name before) is only in office because he has the IQ of a turnip and his rich daddy doesn’t want him anywhere near the family business.
I remember them rolling out Strom Thurmond in a wheel chair with an oxygen mask over his face during his last run for US Senate, and he still won. Rumor is, the oxygen mask was there to keep him from speaking, since his brain was no longer connected to reality. I’ve heard it semi-jokingly referred to as the “Weekend At Bernie’s” senate campaign.
