German chancellor Friedrich Merz announced sweeping tax, pension and labour reforms today, including that workers will now be required to get a medical certificate saying they’re too unwell to work from the first day of sick leave.
Then around 10 years ago or so employers began giving 3 days off (paid) with just a call, some even do 5 days.
During covid some did even longer period.
In my country it worked like that since forever… It sucks, since it comes down to you basically having to go to a doctor’s office with a fucking fever. And ofc doctors office is overcrowded as-is so that takes better part of the day.
I’m talking about this: you wake up and feel like someone dumped pile of shit on you. You call on sick and hope that it gets better. Here in Sweden we have first I think 3 days unpaid this way, after that it is paid for up to 6 days and for longer time you need to go to the doctor. This way you avoid spreading flu for example and overloading the health system.
German workers already have generous holidays, plus a plethora of EU and German holidays, and is anyone seriously sick 3.6 weeks a year? almost a month?? That sounds like a national health crisis.
In US , workers use mandated sick days in place of pathetic vacation days and holidays.
When the average worker is taking a month of sick days a year, they are just taking more vacation days, when they already have the longest vacation schedules in the world.
That sounds an American problem. In any civilized country vacation days are vacation days. Sick days are sick days. Despite conservatives thin foil hat BS people are not taking sick days to go to Maiorca.
