Hi, I’m new to the platform and I’m a little confused about how to follow other users. I go to their profile, click follow, but then it asks for my remote instance and I don’t know what that is. Could someone please guide me?

On voyager you can’t follow but it is close. You can tag users and once tagged you can go to settings and see the list of all the tagged users and jump to their posts from there.

We are on pefied and there is a follow button on each profile, but I don’t know if it really works like reddit. Other than that, on lemmy and pefied(which our instance has), there is an RSS feature, where you can follow a user through that. You click and it gives you a file where you can import on any free/open-source RSS application.

Also, check this to understand what the fediverse is https://jointhefediverse.net/learn/?lang=en-us. In simple plain words, it’s like emails(instances), where it’s everyone has it’s own(email) and can connect with others, even if this is lemmy(similar to reddit), pefied(predecessor of lemmy) and mastadon(similar to x or mastadon).

So, do you recommend I use Lemmy, or should I stay here? The thing is, I haven’t managed to find any NSFW communities on Lemmy; the few I saw are closed!

Most of Lemmy and PieFed instances mostly SFW, more for news, music etc. and the way I understood it, not every instance likes NSFW, that’s why lemmynsfw.com(now its archived) and fedinsfw.app where created. Still, there are users in these SFW who enjoy some NSFW in their feed!
I would recommend staying here, since no other NSFW instances exist.

Yes, you’re absolutely right. I’ve been looking into it and searching for communities, but there are hardly any. People here are loyal and do interact, but our reach is still limited. What can we do to grow? I really don’t want to go back to Reddit!

To grow, you need to bring people in, share and let people know about Lemmy and how it works.

Lemmy and fediverse is fun to join, but it’s not free, admins along with donations are holding the servers up. It would be better if we had more instances I believe.

The story goes that we would leave Reddit for Lemmy, The Big Exodus, but not everyone followed. There were people who didn’t like how Lemmy worked and stayed in Reddit.

Other than that, check erome and fetlife.

Sure, I get it—it hasn’t been an easy task. As for FetLife, I had an account there, but a follower asked me via private message where they could see more of my content; I sent them my OnlyFans link and got banned, so I never created an account there again.

Can you access the user’s profile through mastodon? If so, you could just follow them there. Unfortunate that it isn’t a function on lemmy or piefed though

Mastodon is to twitter as lemmy is to reddit. Thanks to the way the fediverse works, though, most mastodon posts are visible from lemmy and vice versa. They’re just text posts with replies; the formatting and the way voting works may be different, but ultimately it’s all being broadcasted the same way.

So you would find a mastodon instance to sign up to, then visit the profile you want to follow. So the url should look something like instance.com/@username@otherinstance.net

Idk I tried to test it and it doesn’t seem to work, ignore me lol

Oh, okay, I’ll check how to do it—although I did create an account there, I made my first post and got a ban alert… so I don’t think I’ll last long there.
