Whoa, calm down there. He is part of the Socialist Party, which is basically our equivalent to the US Democrats. That dude did a lot of things, but he is definitely not “a leftist.” :)
Things have unfortunately changed in France. What are called Centrists (e.g. president Macron’s party) would now be closer to US dems. The right has shifter to nationalist and xenophobic flag waving, trying to survive between macron and the fascists (National Rally, ça. 30% votes, party founded by a former SS and a litteral torturer)

The right in France is the equivalent of the US democrats. The US right is equivalent to the 3rd reich, but dumber.
