On older hardware I would agree it can be cumbersome. At work, I’ve swapped everything to Ubiquiti and it’s a couple clicks and I’m there. I liked it so much I did it at home with some caveats. Local account only and blocking anything phoning home.

I then read you’re Problem box and confirmed you don’t need NVR on Docker. Seems overkill or really, pointless.

A. Do you absolutely NEED the VLAN for your NVR? Why not just isolate the devices on the network with a bogus DNS record or FW rule blocking via MAC or IP? B. Why run NVR through Docker? I hate devs who only containerize and don’t allow for options. Deal killer, personally. But it it has a native option, why not run that? It’s just extra steps for traffic to pass through which feels like a complicated bottleneck.

I could make it happen eventually. I currently house a 4U 36 bay and 3U 24 bay in my 42U rack. Not fully populated, but currently 10x 8TB in raid 5 and 8x 16TB in raid 5. Only 1 spare 8TB 😅 a few older 3TB in raid 10 with plenty of spares.

How? I’m not in the city, but unless you can get a city job and love in the suburb, I don’t see how it affordable! We pay nearly $7600/year in property taxes, and further towards the city, it’s over 10-12k+. That’s $1k/month in tax alone.

Illinois is pretty bad. Super high property taxes, expensive gas, high ish sales tax most everywhere, and not much to do outside of Chicago.

Outside the city everything needs a car. Sure suburbs have trains and buses, but car is so much easier.

Just do it manually. I’ve done it enough it’s second nature anymore. CLI takes too much time to remember the scripts or exact verbiage.

Otherwise, I used to is the windows ultimate tweak tool from windows 7 era, it’s updated to Win11. I recommend that for friends and family remotely when I can’t help or connect in.

No telemetry, no AI, no store, disable about 30 unnecessary services. I can make Win11 run ~110 processes (down from ~160) and idle at about 2GB RAM vs 6+. It takes about 30 minutes to so so on a fresh install, but it’s worth doing if I absolutely need windows.

I love homelabbing as much as the next guy… But at my current job, i get enough fix to not do so much at home. And work sort of acts like my Dev environment and home is my production anymore.

I want to run something? I stand up a test at work and often implement it. Once familiar, now it’s faster to setup something similar at home instead of eating precious family or me time.

Having said that. I have NUT servers on every UPS/IDF (about 14) and it’s helped numerous times when power is lost. I get a alerts through NTFY and can fix before my UPS goes offline. My batteries are overkill so it buys me about 45-60 minutes too. I’m also now protective and not reactive, so i get to avoid a bunch of complaints.

The other bonus: I spend company money and not my own 😅😅. But most stuff is useful and worth it. I learned to also inform upper management and/or owners each time something I good saves my ass so they know its working and not a waste of money. At least it helps avoid the appearance I’m (always) sitting on my ass all day.
