Libraries are where many folks go to to access government resources. My local DMV (department of motor vehicles) restricted services to by-appointment-only a few years back and, if you needed help making an appointment, their call center directed you to the local library. Note: they did not warn the local libraries they were doing this.

Anyways, you should have seen this asshole come in to get assistance. My co-worker helped him and was polite about it, but told me afterwards that he’d been spearheading the local “defund the library” initiative. Turns out we are good for something even if you buy your own books. Dickhead.

I’m on Windows 11 for work and am not happy about it. They took away my 2-level taskbar, among other regressions.

My first boyfriend in college taught me how to make a roux. It’s such a useful building block for all sorts of foods. We’d make leek and potato stew, generally using the fat from bacon for the roux. Highly recommend as a filling meal for college students.

We learned about food safety (“don’t leave stuff on the counter forever”, “raw chicken is bad for you”), how to properly hand wash dishes, how to budget for a household, and a bit about the various non-nuclear family shapes. (Yes, I learned about divorce in 6th grade. It just hadn’t come up in my life before. No mention of non-hetero couples or non-married couples because, you know, Kentucky in the 90s.) It was a broad life skills class with an emphasis on cooking. Not a clue what we cooked, but we got to use a flour sifter and that was fun.

Source: my mom sucks and nothing is ever her fault. The exception to the rule was when she got wicked drunk at my dad’s memorial service and kept shouting that she’d killed him. She only stopped once a couple people stepped in to try and reassure her that she hadn’t, which brought the focus back on her. (Spoiler alert: she did. Without her actions he’d still be alive.)
