I’m a citizen of the United States.
I speak 4, besides American English, at various levels of proficiency, but I’m an American-born son of immigrants who splits time between the US and EU (my wife is Dutch). I also enjoy linguistics and etymology.
Even though this is anecdotal, every daughter and son of an immigrant diaspora that I personally know, like me in the US, speaks multiple or at least 2 languages.
I argue this meme refers to an issue largely for Americans of European descent. Since a very young age, I noticed “white” people in America seem to be scared of “new” or “foreign” things. One of them is learning a language, trying to speak it in public with a native-speaker, and getting corrected for mistakes which will happen, including self-styled “leftists” and “liberals” (the American definition).
I categorize this specific phenomenon, this fear of embarrassment, as another facet or aspect of what some of my black colleagues back in the States refer to as “white fragility”.
Those people who look down on “Americans” should talk to more of us who aren’t of European descent. Perhaps, that may give some depth to your perception of us, or of what our capacity for a global perspective and living as part of a global community is.
When did the Internet come to reflect society?
When it became ubiquitous to industrialized societies. 1995-ish, in my opinion.
Were we always distrusting mean and vindictive before the net?
Absolutely.
Are we really that bad?

A “jig” is a fast lively dance, usually somewhat comical in appearance.
Because jigs were often performed as comic interludes or sketches at the end of plays, the word “jig” started to mean a a piece of entertainment or a “performance.”
Eventually, slang-users in Elizabethan England started using “jig” to mean a clever trick or a “con.” If you were “playing a jig” on someone, you were fooling them.
“Up” means that the “time for the performance is up” or concluded. The most common way we use “up” to mean finished is in relation to time. When a clock runs out, the time is “up.”
Imagine a cup being filled with water. When it reaches the brim (the top), it is full; it can’t take anymore. In the same way, when a situation or a “jig” (a trick) reaches its limit of time or tolerance, it is “up” at the brim.
In English, we often add “up” to verbs to show that an action is finished 100%. This is known as a “completive particle” in the study of language.
I agree with your sentiment, but I’m compelled to point out that their “billions” is in the valuation of the preferred shares of the corporations they control. If they were to sell to get their billions in cash, the value of their portfolio that analysts purport they have would plummet to pennies on the dollar and very quickly.
Billionaires take out loans using their appraised assets as collateral when they need a couple tens of hundreds of millions in cash.
These billionaires’ egos literally write checks their bodies can’t cash with tacit approval from the Fed and SEC.

In a similar approach to Fedora CoreOS, Azure Linux only has the basic packages needed to support and run containers. Common Linux tools are used to add packages and manage security updates. Updates are offered either as RPM packages or as complete disk images that can be deployed as needed. We in the United States have “Jury Duty”, where the average citizen is required by law to be selected to be part of a “jury of peers” on legal cases if the defendant exercises their right to a trial by jury.
Jurors can be struck down (relieved of their duty) for many reasons in the jury selection phase by attorneys, the judge, or submitting documentation on why they can’t perform their duty.
A corollary compulsory service or duty could be applied to the positions in the three branches of government we have in our current constitutional structure.
We would effectively shift from being a constitutional federal republic (on paper; in practice, the current form of government is a plutocracy) to a constitutional aleatory republic. We would have representative governance, but they’d be subject to review, competency approval, and votes of confidence.
One could also imagine ranked-choice voting and mandatory direct referendums regarding crucial policy decisions. Lobbyists must present their legal proposals to jurist-representatives and the general public, mitigating the efficacy of monetary influence in political speech and advertising.
Taking the definition at its etymological root, all anarchy means is “without rule”.
In my head-canon, that doesn’t necessarily mean the lack of laws, state, institutions or governance; the implication is that there are no citizens or individuals with permanently elevated authority in the polity of government. Without rulers.
Many, of course, disagree with this mostly on the basis of practicality, but I’d like to think it’s another way to describe the concept of “No gods, no kings, no masters, no slaves.”
