It might be cheaper to make it a standard across the board than producing 2 separate models. Unless that makes the device that much more expensive.

New batteries available at just 90% of the price of a new console. Oh, sorry. You have the version 1.3 console, we only still make batteries for the 1.4 console and above.

Well that’s a bit pessimistic. The optimistic take is that third party companies produce cheaper batteries.

        That is optimistic.

There doesn’t seem to be anything in the EU regulations about DRM on batteries, so there’s almost certainly going to be a chip on there with a code embedded in it.

I think this is great, even if Nintendo invents some proprietary way to charge the fuck out of it. Step in the right direction.

Howeverrrr… for something like the Switch(2) I see access to games a more long term issue. Switch 1 had physical cards to put in, but even then you got updates of course online. Switch 2 seems to try and get users to download complete games.

Are these servers still running in 10 years or longer. Otherwise renewing the battery on your old Switch 2 may not even be useful if there is no way to play the games anymore.

Not invalidating anything you just said, but the switch 2 heavily encourages you to use a Micro SD Express Card to store your downloaded games.

I wonder if I can use DD to make backups…

Oh yes! Time to release a “better” version of the Switch 2 after 3.75 million of them have been sold in Europe. This should have been a day one feature.
