I think it probably had more to do with having a store that worked well, games that had good prices, and most importantly: Good customer service. The only other service that comes close is GOG, and that’s mostly because of their DRM free policy.
Yeah, and a lot of them ditch the DRM after a while. Steam is it’s own DRM anyhow, it’s one I don’t terribly mind because it consistently works without fucking up my gaming experience (even augmenting it at times - which no other stores do).

Even then the majority of random games on steam are drm free out of the box nowadays. Mostly just the big triple A studios that have mandatory drm.
