This is actually one of those situations where the official stance is “we only give a shit on paper”
Originally they wanted to call it SEQUEL which was… Idk, some acronym somebody else can look up but apparently it was taken at the time and people actually cared about that kinda thing in the 70s so it became “SQL” which was probably spelled out in business environments but obviously it was still “spiritually” SEQUEL

Wow, I just always thought it was people who were too Microsoft-brained to pronounce it correctly. Still never pronouncing it like that, though.
