Hi everyone, I would really appreciate it if you could help me understand how this platform works and advise me on which communities I can post in, because I don’t really understand it. I made two posts in some communities, but I think they’re either too small or inactive. I’m not sure what to make of it. I came from Reddit, but I got tired of their unfair bans.

    Welcome. I’ll generally search for communities I’m interested in then sort by top last day. I use the Boost app, so not sure how it displays in other apps/web, but I can quickly see number of subscribers, total number of posts, and how long the community has been around. Useful for eyeballing how active comms are. If you’re still curious, pop in and check out the latest posts. Do that routinely for a while and you can build up a decent list to follow.

    I can’t help much for WHERE to post - I generally just leave comments and browse All since there aren’t a ton of people and you can get through pretty much anything on All pretty quickly. I have filtered a lot of comms for various reasons, so that probably helps, though. I’ve noticed a lot of communities are mirrored from reddit - I’d search the subreddit names you used to post in, see what’s here and active. Failing that, a keyword or two of the type of content you’re looking to supply. Pretty sure there’s at least a gonewild comm on a few instances you could participate in.

      Wow, thanks! Right away, I felt like everyone here is much friendlier than on Reddit. On that platform, even asking how to use it properly requires karma, and asking questions like that gets you banned for botting! I feel like it’s much more welcoming here! Hey, where can I get the Boost app you mentioned?

        I believe its called Boost for Lemmy in the Play store for Android. Based on your other question about following, though, Boost doesn’t have the option. Just message and block. I just used to use Boost for Reddit and I was used to the layout. I should experiment with others…

            Yup. Just an app to manage/view/whathaveyou as an alternate to using the web interface. But you end up finding one that let’s you follow, I’d be interested.
