If the only choices are dying quick and dying slow, hopeless people will pick “the less optimal option”.
To be clear, I do not endorse this. This analysis is not justification. However, it is important to understand why this behavior happens in order to change things. If we want people to “stop picking the less optimal option”, they need to be presented with better choices.
