After his White House meeting last week, Zohran Mamdani has a tentative plan to build 12,000 units of affordable housing in Queens. It’s a chance to tackle the climate and affordability crises simultaneously by building green.
I wish him luck if he tries to make affordable housing more energy-efficient. My idea of an ideal city would be entirely made with zero-heating buildings (and then some), but obviously that is not going to be affordable, so in practice efficiency has to be reduced to a level compatible with affordable housing. Passive Houses that are affordable seem to be achievable though, based on some existing projects.
