    You’re right of course, but I think the intention was to illustrate that she (like the machine) is a dangerous object that will hurt you if you get too close.

      The subtle description of a woman as an object for society to build cages around is visible to me with my current cultural lens.

          I think my point of juxtaposing cultural norms is still applicable:

          The average generation is about 33 years. If this is from the middle of the last century, then it is about 2-3 generations ago. I think that is enough for my cultural lens to be pretty radically different from the norms for great grandpa.
