    I don’t dislike the tradition per se, but here in Germany they’re just usually stuffed with candy. Doesn’t help that it’s been so ingrained into the minds of parents and children that a whole industry sprouted from it with pre-packaged Schultüten, completely eliminating the creativeness of the idea and showing whose parents have the money to afford a fancy one and which don’t.

      Wat?

      Our kids had most of their school gear in there and we built all of the bags ourselves. It’s not hard and you can buy blank cardboard cutouts to quickly give you a base to work with. Saw a lot of other kids with home made Schultüten, too.

      Of course there are enough people that just buy them, too… But I wouldn’t say homemade ones are “completely eliminated”.

        Wasn’t implying that they are - it’s just anecdotal experience at best. Good on you for putting something of value in there and actually making it yourself! I’m sure your kid appreciates/appreciated it :)
