  • I don’t doubt that the Ukrainian army is full nazis and fascists. I also don’t doubt that the Russian army is full of nazbols and fascists. Armies tend to attract those sorts.

I wouldn’t really know, but I would not imagine that Ukraine is a progressive country. Outside of the liberal enclaves of the bigger cities, I imagine it’s pretty bad actually. But here’s my surface level view.

    Russia:

    • has invaded a neighbouring sovereign country,
    • puts people in prison for being openly gay,
    • has banned legal and healthcare provision for trans people, and
    • openly declares to the world stage that it is fighting a rearguard action against western degeneracy in favour of Christian family values. (Admittedly I do not speak Russian and I can’t speak to what is translated as degeneracy or satanism or what-have-you, but no one has credibly disputed that this is the essence of what Russian ministers are saying on camera.)

    Ukraine:

    • has not invaded any of its neighbours recently,
    • has, on paper at least, legal protections for LGBT people, and
    • is still signed up to the European Convention of Human Rights.

Regardless of the specific iconography that the less pleasant members of its citizenry choose to display their chuddery, one of the countries is prima facie more nazi than the other in its behaviour at this moment in time. And it’s going to take a lot more than “hurr durr imperialist propaganda” to convince me that it’s Ukraine, given those bare facts.

  • Here’s a song that doesn’t make me angry, it makes me disappointed.

Bad for Good by Meat Loaf.

Why does it make me disappointed? I’m a certified Meat Loaf/Jim Steinman enjoyer, I’ve never tried to deny it. Jim Steinman wrote this song for Meat Loaf originally, but since Meat was going through some stuff, Jim released an album of his own with his version of the song. Now Jim, bless his heart, doesn’t have the voice to carry it, but the tune is one the best he’s written in my book. So the eventual Meat Loaf version should have been a banger. But compare the last 90s of Meat Loaf’s version to Steinman’s. Meat Loaf is singing it with barely any passion (by his standards). The removed the electric guitar wailing in the background (the best part of the song). Even the choir doesn’t seem as into it. The whole thing just seems like it’s had the joy sapped from it.

This is in stark contrast to Out of the Frying Pan (Jim, Meat) where everything in the Meat Loaf version is just more and I just god damned love that song.

Thank you for listening for to my TedX talk.

  • although I do think it’s odd you don’t know what animal you’d be … come on, you don’t have one in mind?

There are some animals that I like more than others, and if I were forced to pick a fursona I would probably pick one of those. But I don’t think that any of them particularly reflect me in any way.

Is yours just your favourite animal? Or is there something else behind your choice? Or do you feel perhaps that your favourite animal(s) do reflect something about you?
