The first few paragraphs basically describe a movement within Japan because entitled (mostly middle-aged and older men, but not exclusively) fuckheads were screaming at staff, forcing them to prostrate themselves on the ground and apologize, and even becoming physically violent. Signs have been up for years about physically abusing station staff and it has continued from there. Just to give some cultural background on that one. Fuck Sony.

Definitely. If you’re not going the “customary” 10 over, people will often ride right on your ass everywhere I’ve driven in Japan.

I live in Japan. We shower first and get into a bath to relax after clean. Families will often share that bathwater.

Getting into a bathtub dirty is kinda gross to me these days.

You can add rural Japanese drivers to that. “Customary” is about 10kph over with some going 19 just to stay safely under one of the higher penalty tiers. I don’t just mean on the expressways, I mean on rural roads marked 30-50.

A lot of companies in Japan have a heavy industries branch or similar. Yamaha has all kinds of verticals as they’re happy to sell you a piano or a motorcycle (or both!)

I’m a farmer as my second job and I definitely need to be able to haul stuff sometimes. I try to take my motorbike when I can, but that only works for some things. If it’s just small things and the closest store carries them and the weather is not terrible (we were 36.x at almost 90% humidity yesterday, for example) and it’s light (people drive like maniacs out here sometimes), I’ll cycle.

Certain deliveries are an example at least in the near term (though lighter vehicles could often be used; my car is a kei-van (660cc, 2-cylinder engine, light-weight vehicle)).

Certain trades also need to carry tools and other things that can require space. Particularly if they’re required to supply their own power or pressurized water (certain plumbing and drain clearing), or the like.

Living in rural Japan, the elderly and otherwise disabled folks might need help, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they must have their own vehicle or that it must be single-occupancy.

I would love to see Canada being a part of the EEA and schengen. I don’t know that it will happen, but more integration with Europe and less with the US would be good.
