I agree, and I think that’s why Project2025 is a thing, and why they’re slow-walking the destruction of everything. They’re avoiding to, as Admiral Yamamoto once said, “awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.” I think our society still has this kind of backbone and character, but only under sudden and extreme conditions.

The article mentions that the datacenter is run by a 3rd party. I’m not arguing to absolve Meta here, but I think this is a classic case of diffusion of responsibility. The more contractors and subcontractors that get involved in stuff like this, the more these kinds of problems crop up.

They’re cheaper in every conceivable way than cars, and that’s why the worst people out there hate them. Once you see the systems in place to equate personal validity and social values with what wealth may be extracted, it’s impossible to look back. Bikes are effectively a form of protest by way of scaling back one’s economic interaction, because of this.

These two ingredients put our 120v dynamo really far up the tech tree from “make fire.” Our intrepid time travelers are going to spend years trying to not be velocaraptor food and foraging for a meal themselves, all while making stupendous amounts of charcoal and prospecting for ore.

What I love about that scene is that Bill and Ted are too dumb to know what a paradox is, and how dangerous that can be for a stable timeline. Instead, they just intuit the most useful way to abuse time travel and everything just happens to work out.

Those only solve for gravity, or not having to pay for fuel to keep things in orbit. Other heavenly bodies are further away, so latency becomes a big problem, followed by exponentially more power to transmit (radio) in order to maintain the same bandwidth. That and cooling: the possible candidates range from as bad as orbit to worse and much worse, all with increasing latency and power needs to boot.

Overall, even the in-orbit version is a bad idea.
